The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has made a significant stride in restoring its long-distance mainline passenger services, marking the resumption of journeys from Johannesburg to Durban and Cape Town this month. The move follows the suspension of these services in 2021 due to operational and network infrastructure challenges.
As Prasa’s Shosholoza Meyl gears up for its maiden trip from Johannesburg to Durban, anticipation is high with the train already at 50% capacity. This development signals a positive response from travelers eager to utilize this vital mode of long-distance transportation.

Andiswa Makanda, spokesperson for Prasa, shared insights into the resumption of services, emphasizing the commitment to safety and efficiency. The Johannesburg to Cape Town route, spanning 30 to 34 hours, adheres to the approved speed regulations set by the railway safety regulator. The journey incorporates essential stopovers for activities such as refueling, water changes, and allowing passengers to disembark and explore towns along the route.
Makanda highlighted the multifaceted nature of the long-distance rail experience, stating, “Durban, you’re looking at 18 hours. People will be able to get out of some of those towns that we’ll be stopping at. Stretch their legs, walk about, experience some of the historic towns along the route.”

The resumption of these long-distance rail services is a crucial step toward reviving a vital aspect of South Africa’s transportation network. Beyond the practicality of connecting major cities, the rail journey offers passengers an opportunity to engage with the cultural and historical richness of towns along the route.
While the 50% capacity on the maiden trip indicates a positive response, it also underscores the demand for reliable and efficient long-distance rail services in the region. The public’s interest in utilizing this mode of transportation highlights the potential for rail travel to play a significant role in addressing South Africa’s broader transportation needs.
As Prasa continues to navigate operational challenges and infrastructure improvements, the resumption of these services signals a renewed focus on the importance of rail travel in fostering connectivity and accessibility across the country. The Johannesburg to Durban journey, with its planned stopovers and scenic routes, not only serves as a means of transportation but also offers travelers a unique and enriching experience.
