Prasa’s Shosholoza Meyl Resumes Long-Distance Rail Services: Johannesburg to Durban at 50% Capacity for Maiden Trip

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has made a significant stride in restoring its long-distance mainline passenger services, marking the resumption of journeys from Johannesburg to Durban and Cape Town this month. The move follows the suspension of these services in 2021 due to operational and network infrastructure challenges.

As Prasa’s Shosholoza Meyl gears up for its maiden trip from Johannesburg to Durban, anticipation is high with the train already at 50% capacity. This development signals a positive response from travelers eager to utilize this vital mode of long-distance transportation.

Makanda highlighted the multifaceted nature of the long-distance rail experience, stating, “Durban, you’re looking at 18 hours. People will be able to get out of some of those towns that we’ll be stopping at. Stretch their legs, walk about, experience some of the historic towns along the route.”
